How Acupuncture Can Help Diminish Symptoms Associated With Menopause
Menopausal transition is a normal stage of life. It usually occurs in women between the ages of 45 and 55 and is a result of changes in the hormones estrogen and progesterone. These changes have an effect on the whole body and people may experience, night sweats, hot flashes, insomnia, depression, weight gain, moodiness and irritability, painful intercourse, and other symptoms. It does not have to be normal to experience these symptoms. Many women have a smooth menopausal transition and many search for treatment to help relieve their symptoms. Acupuncture can help make the transition smooth and relieve the symptoms.
Acupuncture reduces hot flashes and night sweats.
Many research studies have shown the effectiveness of acupuncture at reducing symptoms associated with menopause. Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine found in a randomized control study that when treated with acupuncture the severity of patient’s hot flashes decreased significantly. The exact mechanism of how acupuncture works is not completely understood. But in regards to hot flashes and night sweats, researchers have found that acupuncture decreases the secretion of calcitonin gene-related peptide, which is a vasodilating neuropeptide that affects hot flashes.
Acupuncture has many far reaching positive effects on the body. It works with your body to obtain homeostasis, a state of balance. Periods of transition, such as menopausal transition, put additional strain on your body and acupuncture can help assist you in maintaining balance and well-being.
What Can Be Expected at an Acupuncture Treatment?
Acupuncture is very comfortable and relaxing. After an initial health consultation with the acupuncturist, thin, sterile, single-use needles will be placed at specific points on your arms, legs, hands, feet, and/ or ears. The needles stay put for 30 minutes as you lie on a massage table. At this point you are feeling very relaxed and some people fall asleep or meditate.
Patients being treated for hot flashes, night sweats, and other menopausal symptoms, usually feel some relief after the first treatment. In order for the treatment to have a lasting effect, weekly treatments for 4 weeks are recommended, then the acupuncturist will assess whether more treatments are needed.
